Dan and Kay Sweeney

These volunteers are very special to Food Link not only as volunteers but also as wonderful friends. Kay Sweeney began her service with us in 1991, our very first year of operation. In 2001 her husband Dan came on board after his retirement from the federal government.

Picking up and delivering food 4 days a week, spending as many as 12-18 hours a week, they have made an impact on the agencies and the people they come in contact with. Willing to substitute and fill in where they are needed, working miracles with donors to turn them into enthusiastic and generous supporters of our mission, they are wonderful and valuable ambassadors for Food Link. As the volunteer director, I use them as a sounding board when considering new areas of need because of their knowledge of the communities we serve. In their spare time Kay and Dan enjoy their children and grandchildren. Kay is an accomplished artist and Dan is very involved with the St. Mary's Athletic Association as well as a enjoying his collection of model trains.

Dan and Kay make a difference in this community and to everyone their lives touch. It would be hard to calculate the thousands and thousands of pounds of food that this couple have delivered to our struggling neighbors in need over the last 17 years. Selfless, kind, caring, generous, and committed are just a few words that attempt to define my friends.

Lila Lowman, Coordinator of the First Baptist Eastport Food Pantry said it best, "What can you say about people so dedicated? So pleasant. Always there and so dependable. They love what they are doing. They are wonderful people and we love them!"

Betty Meade, also with First Baptist Eastport says, "When I first met Dan and Kay many years ago, I did not realize what a magnificent ministry they had distributing food to the various pantries and shelters and delivering to individuals they know are in need. I recently read this poem."

What Does Love Look Like?
By St. Augustine

It has hands to help others,
It has feet to hasten to the poor and needy.
It has eyes to see misery and want.
It has ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men.
That is what love looks like.

"What a wonderful description of Dan and Kay Sweeney!"
